Struggles of Competitive Pokemon Playing

We've almost all played Pokemon, or at least all of us under the age of 27. Those who haven't are strange and rare... like Shiny Pokemon. It is a lot of people's classic childhood game: you get a starter Pokemon (fire is always the best - always), you go on an adventure, you may or may not bond with your collection of pixels equipped with four different moves designed to inflict animal abuse on an NPC's beloved pet, you beat the gym leaders, then you beat the elite four and then either restart the game and do it all over again or you try and complete the Pokedex and henceforth the save file becomes sacred. You can never erase a completed Pokedex save file. It is forbidden.

*whispers* it is forbidden.

It's pretty simple. The game requires a little bit of thought and strategy - mainly just not using Pokemon all of the same type because that's dumb. You're dumb if you do that. That's what gym leaders do and their entire professional career consists of being beaten by 12 year olds. Don't do that.

The game is not entirely that difficult. The biggest challenge for me was always trying to figure out the puzzles that prevented you from getting from one area to the next (like a maze of doors that locked or unlocked or the teleporting pads in Team Aqua's hideout etc) and the battles just required building up strength. The aim of the game is, in short: level up your Pokemon until they can punch things in the face harder than they can punch back. Simple and wholesome fun for kids aged 8-12. If you're losing just train more and more and more. It's an adventure! Pick it up years later when a new game comes out and it's the same thing all over again only with newer graphics and less recognisable Pokemon.

This is not at all what playing competitively is like. Playing competitively is soul-crushing and to take it seriously is to become obsessive. Pokemon is far more complicated than it seems on the surface. At its core you are playing paper scissors rock (fire, water, grass... as well as 14 other types) but there are so many special circumstances, modifiers, amendments, and so much more that may suddenly change that scissor into a rock crushing machine.

I'm here to look  cute and ruin lives!

For example: Grass is defensively weak against fire and offensively neutral so if you equip your grass Pokemon with a water move then suddenly it can fight back. If it's raining then water moves become more powerful. Moves have a "base power" which means it is X-strong but now with rain and being super effective that base power is 1.5X and the damage is doubled. Fire Pokemon is kinda screwed right? Well not if it goes first so whoever wins might depend on who is faster. They both might have the same base speed stat but then there are things called EV's (Effort Values) which are basically extras boosts to certain stats that naturally happen as you're playing. Defeating certain Pokemon contributes to something like your attack stats or your speed stats so if you have more EVs into speed you can move faster than things you might otherwise be slower than (especially if they're busy putting those extra stats into attack). So Fire Pokemon is now faster! Aha! You are going down Grass Pokemon! But wait - the Pokemon is holding a particular item that boosts its speed (but limits it to using the first move it uses) called a Choice Scarf. Aha! Fire Pokemon is screwed! But aha! Fire Pokemon isn't taking any chances and uses a priority move which means it goes first regardless of speed stats. Aha! Now fire moves are usually Special Attack but this priority move is a physical attack so uses the Attack stat, not the superior Special Attack stat. There's Special/Normal Attack/Defence so someone can be physically defensive and almost impossible to kill with physical attacks (thus certain Pokemon are completely unusable against it) but because of the paper scissors rock metaphor they are incredibly easy to kill with special attacks (or if they're great at both then they're weak at attacking or really slow. For every advantage there's a disadvantage... unless you're Mew in which case you're adorable AND awesome at everything). This means that even though this fire move is twice as powerful against this grass Pokemon the move isn't that strong because this Fire Pokemon is a special attacker, not a physical one. Furthermore the Grass Pokemon has a high physical Defence stat instead of a Special Defence stat and thus can withstand the hit and use their water move and win...

...unless they miss... or the fire move gets a critical hit which makes it cause even more damage. I forgot to mention that if you use a move with the same type as you are then it is increased by 1.5X so the grass Pokemon doesn't get this advantage on a water move. They could also have used some form of stat increase like Swords Dance that makes their attack stat 2X. There are a lot of factors going on here.

Then there's Pokemon with two types which can cause 4x weaknesses to some attacks, or immunities to some attacks that would be super effective to one of their two types. Then there's Pokemon with abilities that negate or lessen their weaknesses like Levitate, which makes Pokemon immune to ground type attacks.

Now imagine that level of complexity. All the time... times 6 (for the 6 Pokemon in your party). Only there are hundreds of different Pokemon with different strategies involved to choose from... And there are up to three different abilities that a Pokemon can have so you're not entirely sure if something is weak to ground moves or immune to them. There are a variety of different moves any given Pokemon can have. Some Pokemon can be built to be either Special Attackers or Physical Attackers or both simultaneously so you can't tell if you're prepared to defend yourself against them until you get punched in the face and see how well you survive.

My favourite thing is when casual players don't obsess over utilising this mechanic and I use an Avalugg with Curse against them. Curse lowers speed for raising Attacking/Defence. This lowered speed would hinder other Pokemon but Avalugg is literally a giant chunk of ice and is one of the slowest possible things you could ever use. It always goes last so Curse just makes it more powerful and harder to kill every turn. With the help of the item Leftovers (which heals you a little bit each turn) and the move Protect (that protects you from damage for one turn so you lose no damage but Leftovers still heals you) you can keep getting harder and harder to kill and just keep healing yourself... When faced with an Avalugg the reaction 50% of the time is give up and leave. There's a lot of joy of having your opponent quit after a few turns because they just can't deal with a literal hunk of ice. Of course it has a shockingly abysmal special defence and is actually incredibly easy to kill if you know how... But it's a new Pokemon that no one would in their right mind use (because of it's terrible weakness and ice typing) so not many people realise the proper way to deal with it. It's either an easy win or a quick defeat and you have to gamble on your opponent's knowledge of the game, Avalugg, and their team's build. They removed gambling from the single player game but it is stronger than ever in competitive matches.

There's too much complexity. It keeps going. It never stops... and the shift from one generation to another might make the same strategy completely useless in a new playing field. You have to keep developing your strategies and counter measures.

There's psychology involved too. In the normal game an NPC will not switch their Pokemon out until it faints so this gives you the chance to switch out if things are going poorly and bring in something else designed for the job and easily defeat it. A human won't let this go down. You can bring in something that is strong against something then predict that your opponent will use up a turn switching to something else to deal with the new threat. At this point you can switch out too and they're faced with the same problem as before and have to either switch back and forth (and risk getting attacked) or stand and fight. You can also attack with a move you predict to be better suited for what you think they'll switch to instead of the Pokemon they've already gotten out so when they switch in they switch in to a lot of damage. Of course this might backfire and you've wasted a turn on an ineffective move when you could be hitting the opponent with super effective moves.

Then comes strategies and team building... That's right... we're only starting (but I won't go into much detail and will leave you soon to try and process all of this).

Have you heard of status buffs and Baton Pass chains? Well... if you increase you attack stat it disappears if you switch out unless you use Baton Pass so the new Pokemon has all the increased stats and starts off super powerful. If the opposing team is doesn't have taunt/clear smog/destiny bond/roar/whirlwind (which is negatable with ingrain) then a Baton Pass chain quickly becomes unstoppable unless it's relying on an Espeon with Stored Power in which case an Aegislash can defeat it with sucker punch.

*Deep breath*

So naturally I decided that after a few weeks of obsessing over this I needed to quit. This wasn't just something I should do but I had to do. Pokemon was consuming my time... my life. I was thinking about how to improve my team of Baton Passers or create the perfect mix of aggressive attackers with token Special/Physical walls or how to overcome Aegislash or a Baton Pass chain team or trying to utilise the ability Speed Boost and Swords Dance combo but realising Taunt screws me over so perhaps I should go for a suicide Skarmory lead with spikes and stealth rock for entry hazards and hope they don't have rapid spin and so forth and so forth until my brain felt like it was melting through my ears and I had trouble sleeping.

That's right. Pokemon caused me to lose sleep. I needed to win. But because it is basically paper scissors rock with 1000 variables instead of 3 there is no way to defeat every team. One strategy will easily defeat all sorts of teams only to have one thing screw it up and cause another team to absolutely destroy you.

Just don't do it. Just... stop. Pokemon is a good bit of fun for kids and offers you an increased complexity if you so wish to get into it more but playing it competitively is a fast tracked way to insomnia and disaster. There are people who have been obsessing over this for several years. I was tutored by someone who had been playing competitively for 7 years. I didn't understand a word he said at first but it all eventually sunk in and I saw a world of Pokemon I never did before... and it was far too big for me... These people will destroy you. This game will destroy you.

But... if that brief introduction to how complex Pokemon can get (we have only just begun to scratch the surface of strategy) was interesting to you then maybe try it out? If you saw that as an incomprehensible wall of alienating text than good. Good... you have a chance to get out of this franchise alive.

Hey kids, you want to buy some drugs?

I personally have been Pokemon-free for a while now. I attend regular Pokemon Masters Anonymous meetings. My family is saying I'm looking healthy and the twitches have nearly subsided. I hope that my Pokemon addiction won't relapse in the future but who knows... Hoenn remakes are come out soon.

You cannot escape me forever... I'm coming for you...

I'm on the train right...

So there I was, on the train, wearing 3-quarter camouflage pants, converse shoe look a likes and my collarless shirt with superman on it with no jacket because it was hot. I was playing my Pokemon Yellow (original copy from the 90's) on my old Gameboy Advance (not the SP), my long untamed, unbrushed and curly hair on my shoulders complimenting my untended to hobo beard... just listening to some alternative/experimental rock band from Canada on my non-iPod mp3 player and taking up space on the train because I'm slightly overweight.

A very hot girl sits down next to me.

Oddly enough, the idea that perhaps striking a conversation with her did not occur to me to be a likely thing to occur in the near future.

"So heard about the upcoming Green Lantern movie? Dude is weak to like... yellow..."

Which is even worse than Hancock's weakness... which is true love. Awww... (which is quite the weakness, and we should learn to overcome that and be strong even when a girl is nearby...) Sorry I meant SPOILERS!!! There, now you can read the sentence that I just wrote. Happy? Good. Let's move on.

Though there did turn out to be a nerd girl on the train! I saw her at the Esplanade waiting for the next train, as we had both been forced off the one we were on already because it was terminating (WHY!? WHY NOT JUST KEEP GOING LIKE YOU NORMALLY DO!?) and she was playing Pokemon on her Gameboy Advance SP (DAMN HER! She's semi-old school but still more advanced/richer than I?) Then on the way home she was on the train once again. Ah, a nerd girl on the train! If only I talked to her... if only she was more attractive... Not that she was unattractive, but she looked misleadingly fit for a girl playing Pokemon. Admit it, you go for runs don't you? DON'T YOU!? You're an athlete luring me in with your Pokemons...

Anyhoo...

Trains. They're on strike again. Why? Why indeed? I suppose we'll be getting news reports on it. Perhaps even I'll write one! I am a journalist.... student after all! Although it is a bit ambitious for me seeing as I've never actually interviewed anyone , this is actually only my second assignment and I doubt the government department of transportation returns 1st year Journalism students' phone calls. I will most likely end up thinking of a more realistic idea for my assignment... but oh well. Next time there's a strike and I've actually become a confident/competent journalist I will be there! I will not be turned away! I will watch my step and mind the gap as I enter the door, but that door will be your office door mr... whoever! (Or ms or mrs) Or... I will phone you! But either way, I shall get my interview.

Thankfully every time there's a strike I somehow manage to coincidentally leave home hours early. Which is good for me, but it can't possibly keep going forever... soon, I shall be stuck at a train station missing something important all because of YOU! YOU TRANSPERTH!

Turns out this sort of thing is not local (DUH) and can be found everywhere... even London! :O

Click on this link for a funny flash animation song!

Enjoy that song? Yeah I found it amusing too... oh wait sorry I mean: Warning! Contains harsh language and should not be listened to by small children... with parents nearby. Oh I'm bad at the reasonable forewarning aren't I?

Well goodnight stalkers :) Enjoy my life.

Generation of Fug

Have you seen the latest generation of Pokemon!? I'm looking through them as we speak and one thing has jumped out at me...

...they're fugly.

Man, kids these days... Kids these days aren't even as old as the franchises they follow! Hell, I actually am younger than some of the most famous children's franchises that are still around today... TMNT for one (yes, it's from the 80's! ) Transformers is another. I'm not really a big follower of either (though I do love those mutant turtles... fond memories as a kid watching them). Pokemon on the other hand consistently makes me feel like a kid again as I keep going back to it to play the game again or check when the next movie comes out (I haven't seen past movie 4... so going "wow #13 came out in Japan a while ago!" doesn't really excite me that much). I am older than it! Yay? I remember as a little kid turning on the TV to see this bizarre yellow mouse electrocuting a 10 year old boy repeatedly and thought that it was worth watching. You know as far as pilots for children's TV shows go, forced animal fights and child abuse is pretty interesting and will definitely get you an audience of some kind, even if part of it is concerned parents going "You shouldn't be watching this!"

My mother doesn't like Pokemon... she thinks it's pointless.

She's wrong! No!

But back to the point: The new pokemon are ugly. Some of them are no longer animals, they're just... things. Stupid pointless things.

One of them right, is a blob of icecream... it evolves into an icecream cone... which then evolves into... a double icecream cone! My goodness!

Damn it's ugly. I'd much rather eat it than catch/train it. Can you imagine that? Go Baibanira! (It's called that in Japanese) The opponent used Sunny Day! Baibanira melted... you lost the match. But yeah, if you're hungry or your pokemon is hungry, just take it out of it's pokeball and start to lick it. Lick it good. At first it thinks you're giving it affection in a bizarre way, but no, it soon realises the horror that awaits it... it starts to struggle, starts to scream it's name as it's mind wraps around the concept that you are going to kill and devour it slowly. It knows it can't escape and it accepts it's fate as you murder it in cold blood....

... right in front of a staring child...

Mwahahahahaha!

A lot of Pokemon also seem to just be the same as old ones only slightly different. For example: Here's the less threatening/interesting version of the already ugly Carvanha.

Whyyy? It doesn't even do anything! It doesn't evolve it just sits there being ugly! Not even Dark type Ugly, just... a fish with serious need of some glasses.

You know as far as eating your Pokemon go, this next one you probably would. It's basically a moogle... only turned into a shroom.

Actually, this one isn't that ugly... it's kinda cute. I don't know why I had a problem with this one earlier it's actually all right... besides the fact that it is obviously a pokeball turned into a mushroom with a pig nose. Previous generations have had hideous pokemon too. Generation 1 had Mr Mime, Gen 2 had Dunsparce, Gen 3 had Huntail, Ludicolo, Shelgon, Hariyama and so on, Gen 4 had Purguly, Probapass, Mamoswine, Bidoof, Budew, Amipom, Buizel... OK the list goes on and on... And my LEAST favourite... CARNIVINE!

IT'S SO HIDEOUS! I was repulsed when I first encountered it, I didn't want to catch it I wanted to set it on fire until it died. What is it!? Why does it look like a poorly made muppet!?

WHYYYYYY!!!!????

So yeah, I see the trend here in Pokemon is that they will get increasingly ugly. I fear to see Gen 6 when they one day develop that. Hunchback versions of old pokemon everywhere! Pokemon that resemble squabbling inbred rats mixed with birds that did it with trees, pokemon that start to resemble machines instead of animals. A sad clown with only half a face and a tail, a monkey that lives underwater and resembles a half goat with insomnia. Nothing is too bizarre for Pokemon! Hell, they took Tauros and gave him a freaking affro:

WHY!? WHAT DID HE DO TO YOU!?

Well, all in all... I still cannot wait to play Black and White :) Come on, get released in Australia! Woo! Apparently no Pokemon from prior generations appear in the Ishuu region itself which sucks a lot... for most things... but on the bright side: NO ZUBATS! I hate caves because of them. You just keep running into so many Zubats! They're not even worth the experience they give you for killing them!

Pokemon! POKEMON!? AUSTRALIA!

Pokemon... mmhmm...

SPARTA! No I mean... AUSTRALIA!

Yes! OK, faithful people of the assorted ethnic groups of the internet (i.e. people who like blogging, forums, porn, youtubers and all those weird people who use the internet for... for... useful stuff!? :S what? the internet is merely for entertainment of the Y generation! Get lost online real estate agents!) this blog is to prove that I have not abandoned my window... my precious window for all of you to look within and be confronted by the weirdness you find therein. Therein you find gold too... but not today. Maybe tomorrow? Keep visiting you'll get that gold eventually. Yes, I have been occasionally co-authoring ramblingsofcornflakes and have recently done a semi-epic blog that's 7 pages long (http://ramblingsofcornflakes.blogspot.com/2008/11/20-minutes-is-not-enough.html) when I could've been here blogging instead but oh well... I haven't completely abadoned this blog and I still use it and I will just figure out a way to keep both of these blogs active. Neither will be too personal but oh well... I think anything on Ramblings will be more relevant to the fellow co-authors (Brooklyn, cornflake, the thing that should not be) and anything here will be more relevant to Rayne, Becca L. Blogmore and Brooke... because no one else in the world reads this? Who is Bella? :S

Speaking of epics... Baz (ha! Baz) Lurhman's EPIC film Australia is out! It is! It's true! Yes! It got 2 stars as a rating!

... what?

HAHAHAHAHA! Ooooohhh burn! I was wondering if that was going to happen! This movie has some serious hype, it's got some serious attention and it's going to be to Australia as what Lord of the Rings was to New Zealand... and I thought to myself "imagine if there was just so much hype around this... and someone gave it a bad review" and guess what? Well you don't need to guess I've already told you! Someone... gave it only TWO STARS! That's... terrible. That's abismal! If I ever got anyone giving any film I made when I was older only two stars I'd be depressed. I'd be seriously hurt and have my confidence shooken like a ball in a blender on liquify that's attached to a paint shaker thingy... the thing that makes it all even or something. You know? The thing you don't touch in stores (LIKE Bunnings! Lowest prices are just the beginning!) but you think "oooh that'd be so cool what I could do with that..." but in reality... there is nothing to do with an object that moves a pain can up and down really quickly.... what does that do!? It has one purpose alone... and that's boring. It doesn't do what it does in the simpsons (APRIL FOO- BOOM! *mushroom cloud of beer* Yes, I know someone out there will get that)

But yeah. Ouch man ouch... this review was harsh, said that there was barely any scenery, it was unartistic, failed to match up to similar movies (never seen a film compared to so many titles of films I've never heard of...) and the only person in it that did any decent acting was the little aboriginal girl who played the mixed-blood orphan (Those guys seem to be natural born actors. The Rabbit Proof Fence! Wow those poor girls... you really cared for them and they were wonderful) and Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman "struggle to establish characters we believe in or care about." - Mark Naglazas The West Australian. Ouch... I like those actors. Ouch. So yeah... long awaited Australian Epic got a bad review... ha! I laughed at that and chances are... I'm still going to see it. Because one) Nothing else is out and I am a big fan of the Australian film industry seeing how I want to be in it sometime I have to support it two) Certain people out there will get annoyed if I don't go see it with them... yes, you know who you are and you're adorable! We're not going to see Quarantine no matter how good reviews it gets... ESPECIALLY if it gets good reviews... and three) Just turn the page and you get a half a page ad for Australia with all the OTHER movie reviewers reviews all over it.

"AUSTRALIA IS SIMPLY MAGNIFICENT, ENTHRALLING Entertainment on a Grand Scale, as Spectacular an Achievement as Anything Seen in the Movies This Year." - Moviehole.com

Finally a type of hole I can enjoy... oh that sounds... so wrong.... in a reversely perversely way... (I rhyme! reversely perversely! :P ehehehe but no seriously I don't have a gender...)

"A Sun-Burnt Spectacle" - Daily Telegraph

Why are you saying great things about a movie... by comparing it to sun-burn?

"Luhrmann's Epic Triumph" - Sunday Telegraph

"We Knew Australia Would be Bib but Baz Luhrmann's Movie is Huge!" - New York observer

And there's a few more but you get the idea... Mark Nagalazas is the only one here who doesn't like this movie. Just like I'm the only one who liked Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Hahaha! Speaking of great epic movies that really suck...

2001: A Space Odyssey! Hahaha yeah hurry up and yell at me and call me ignorant and say that I hate Stanley Kubrick which is a lie... I love him. I wish he was still alive.... 79 year old men.... yeah! NO! NO! OK, sorry for... melting your mind. Trust me, one day I shall reveal to you all why 2001 is the worst movie good ol' Stanley ever made.... but not right now. (Clockwork Orange is AWESOME! Brilliant! Truly Brilliant! I'm doing the hand signals again...)

OK! This post was ACTUALLY going to be about POKEMON! (Hey little kid you like a jump rope, what do you think candy is made out of? pokemon! POKEMON!? hahaha no, actually candy is more like kodak film... free cookie points to those who get that reference!) so let it be about pokemon now!

OK, for all those out there who remember growing up as little kids and seeing Pikachu make team rocket blast off again and again everytime it would use thundershock on thier meowth hot air balloon (which... magically ALWAYS comes back?) will also remember that.... the pokemon TV series is... boring and childish really. That, and Ash NEVER GROWS UP! He's technicall 22 now... or even older I think. Why is he still wandering around and why was it legal for him to wander around anyway? And does he actually keep his mothers constant nagging advice to keep clean underwear? Who knows... who cares?

This blog is not about the TV series either (which I have found a way to download around 400 episodes of... Anime's never die... only the animators who draw them!? I wish Death Note had tons of episodes. It's 37 seem puny compared to other shows, even Full Metal Alchemist's 52 and Movie. But I guess the pure awesomeness and INGENIOUSLY constructed and perfectly written story of Death Note doesn't allow for it to be drawn out longer and longer without it dying down in pure awesomeness) This is actually about the games. The games...

... are made of awesome...

(So is my grandma's recon armour!)

My Mewtwo brings all the trainers to the yard and theyre like "damn right ur pokemons better than ours!" I could train u, but id have to charge:P

Quite simply, Pokemon games are addictive and if I haven't mentioned this before it's because I was too busy playing the games to blog. They are incredibly addictive and I love playing them! I am currently playing Ruby, I have caught Groudon with a Great Ball (Because it's GREAT!) and I have just defeated the final gym leader and I'm just training my pokemon to the point where the Elite Four will be nothing but any other old series of super hard trainers... nothing shall stand in the way of my all powerful team of Breloom (nicknamed "mgicshroom") my Swampert (nicknamed "Muddles") and... whatever.... the other ones...

AND MY MEW! (mewwwwby!) HELL YEAH I HAVE A MEW! It is awesome and it megapunches anything in it's way to death! Yes, I don't care about you, I have a MEW! Basically these games (which I have on an emulator on my computer) take up my spare moments that I get away from reading books on Psychology and New Moon (Slow... book... slow...) and now I have become a zombie at the computer screen wanting to versus more trainers! The games have a simple design with a few visual puzzles thrown in when you're nagivating things and plenty of trainers to challenge your strategy and strength and so it becomes one very addictive game that will never get old.... and the built in gameshark and codes I got from the internet that allow me to have mew from the very start of the game (as soon as I have pokeballs I can catch Mew... well... it's really hard because he's still a legendary so I need to beat him up and throw balls at his head for a while before he stays down...) I don't know why I just felt like mentioning that I still love the pokemon games. I know people out there agree with me: TV series for kids, Games are for life.

This really is the closest I get to being a gamer... I don't even play my playstation anymore... even though I have decided sometime during the holidays I will most definitely get round to melding my body to the couch and picking up that good old friend I call the controller and showing Sephiroth and Riku who the REAL keyblade master is! BAM! I've beaten Sephiroth with the kingdom key there is no better than I! Well... maybe there are people out there who actually play that game nonstop... (bonus cookie points for those who know which game I'm talking about! Hint: Not Final Fantasy IV... which I really would like to play though)

There is something about the ability to go whereever you want, capture and control beings of untold power which magical attacks that will shock, burn, freeze or poison your enemies and leave them unconscious after one hit from your fists that really appeals to me...

Mew! Mew is awesome! Cute, cuddly, mess with it and you're screwed!

POKEMON!

Is seriously... messed up OK we all know that in the games small children are allowed to go round gambling and animal fighting without their parents and that sounds messed up enough as it is... but you know I love youtube and I hope you do too... and so for some bizzarre reason that I don't remember I thought looking up banned segments of our favourite childhood TV show would be fun and interesting and it is (as interesting as looking up youtube videos on dial up speed internet can be) but OK watching a scene that is banned because it has guns being held to people's head is interesting and even amusing but then there's this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnSarYc3MCQ&NR=1

Yeah... yeah I... don't remember that during the children's english version of the series back when it was on TV at 7:30 in the morning just before I used to go to school. Remember when children's TV was actually for children? I know you can go back to H.R. Puff 'N' Stuff and find so many links and similarities to drugs but you know... that video right there is proof that sometimes the writers forget that they're not on the adult channel anymore...

Great now I'm hooked on weird banned childrens TV...
